How to avoid a frosty first date
Style notes on making a great first impression

The key to presenting your best-self is looking confident, comfortable and relaxed.
First impressions are everything, people make a judgement within 7 seconds and that’s usually before you’ve even said a word. So wearing something that looks great and enables you to feel great too is key.
With social distancing rules still determining we meet outside, chances are you’ll be meeting earlier in the day for coffee or a lunchtime date.

These are likely to be more informal than a dinner date, so your aim should be to match your surroundings by looking easy going, yet stylish.
Wearing smart – casual jeans or chinos and a well fitting shirt, under a (cashmere) sweater that fits nicely beneath a warm jacket, would be perfect. Make sure your outer layer isn’t too tight or so short that your sweater hangs below it.
Keep your shoes casual too, a sporty pair of tennis shoes or boat shoes that aren’t scuffed will work well. Make sure the colour of your socks matches either the colour of your shoes or trousers.
Wearing a mask is now part of every day life and as inconvenient as it is, I would recommend you make an effort there also. Finding a mask that complements the rest of your outfit will show your date that you have made a concerted effort in the style stakes.

As you will likely be meeting earlier in the day, if the date goes well and your schedules allow you might find yourselves moving on for a walk, to a gallery or pub garden. Having a ‘man bag’ with you will allow you to carry warm accessories like gloves, scarf and an umbrella.
Layering really is key to the success of an outfit in the unpredictable British weather. So think carefully about how items complement each other and ensure each layer projects the image you want to portray on your first date and hopefully many more will follow.
Do you need help putting together the perfect look for the perfect date? I have a range of services from full style makeovers to personalised look boards like the one below.
